Your flight to Benbecula across the Sea of the Hebrides introduces you to the Celtic splendour of the Western Isles, or Outer Hebrides, nestling between North and South Uist. Expect a failte (welcome) to Benbecula’s mountains and fords (Beinn na Faoghla), after which it is named. Step back in time as you explore the freshwater lochs and causeways that replaced the fords and link Benbecula north and south to the Uists. Amongst the 15 local “townships”, Balivanich has the largest population with the RAF station now the island’s airport. Discover Benbecula’s history at the Museum nan Eilean by Sgoil Lionacleit. Away from the crowds, feel the breeze in your hair exploring Benbecula’s machair (Gaelic for the distinctive low-lying dune pastures); spot rare seabirds off Peter’s Port; and explore the western fringe relics of 14th-century Borve Castle and Nunton’s medieval chapel. The 1,800 locals, who make Benbecula a relatively densely populated island, have traditions dating back generations, including that Scottish game, golf – try Benbecula Golf Course near the airport, while the Isle of Benbecula Hotel has fishing rights on 15 of its lochs.
