Your flight to Tehran takes you to Iran’s bustling and industrious capital, with a history dating back to the 9th century. Take in the Islamic and Sassanid architecture of the iconic Azadi Tower and the eight minarets of the Motahari Mosque. Discover the origins of Tehran at the National Museum of Iran with prehistoric, Islamic and modern exhibits. The living culture of the city is at the bustling Tehran Bazaar at midday where you can haggle over carpets and tribal jewellery, leather and silks. Away from the crowds, picnic in Jamshidieh Park with views across Tehran and hike up nearby Kolakchal mountain. Or escape the city heat to Karaj (35km west of Tehran) for waterskiing in the Amir Kabir Dam or opt for skiing in Tochal (ten minutes from Tehran). Locals in Tehran love their fresh fruits, herbs and rice. Try lamb kebab or khoresht (stew) and adass polo (lentil rice), and don’t miss out on rangeenak (sweet with walnuts, dates and sesame seeds). Sip black tea or ashi mashi cola but it’s worth noting that in Tehran it’s usual to drink cold water with meals. |
