A flight to Harare takes you to Zimbabwe’s capital city, home to two million people. Its name in Shona means “the one who does not sleep” and it is home to the National Art Gallery, the Ewanrigg Botanical Gardens and 14 different golf courses.
The living culture of Harare is best explored at Chapungu Kraal (on the eastern side of Harare) where you can see talented, Shona stone sculptors at work. Mix with the locals at the vast Mbare Market – a real African shopping experience – and visit the Tobacco Sales Floor to experience the largest tobacco auction centre in the world.
Away from the crowds, enjoy panoramic views of Harare from Kopje Hill or spot lions and cheetahs, giraffes and elephants at the Lion and Cheetah Park or Lake Chivero Game Park (both short drives from Harare).
Locals in Harare are addicted to sport. There is horse racing most Saturdays at Borrowdale Race Course while Harare’s National Sports Stadium hosts football (soccer) matches which draw capacity crowds of 60,000 avid sports fans. |
