Your flight to St Lucia takes you to the southern end of the Caribbean, a tropical island with an Arawak Indian and French past. Follow the heritage trail round the colonial buildings of Castries, St Lucia’s capital, and take a plantation tour round the Fond Doux Estate. Step back in time at Pigeon Island National Landmark with its Amerindian past, pirate hideout and Choiseul Heritage Site. Immerse yourself in the local culture of St Lucia at the Fond Latislab Creole Park where you can hear Kwéyòl (St Lucia’s second language) and a chak chak band. Take in the scent of St Lucia’s tropical flowers at Diamond Botanical Gardens or see rare snakes on Maria Island (just off south-east St Lucia). Or go diving in the mysterious depths to Keyhole Pinnacles and snorkelling in the waters of Anse Chastenet. The people of St Lucia love their seafood dishes such as langouste (lobster) and lambi (conch) as well as plantain, sweet sop and breadfruit. Try green fig and saltfish pie and wash it down with a local piton beer, fresh fruit juice and a shot or two of rum.
